VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO HELP WITH BUCKTHORN REMOVAL
During October and November we will have six Saturday sessions to remove buckthorn in Plymouth, MN, near the Oakwood Elementary school. ( 17340 County Road6, Plymouth, MN55447.) Come join us to help remove buckthorn and learn how you can work with your neighbors, friends, and city government to eradicate buckthorn from parks and woods. It is a lofty goal; in October of 2011 we successfully treated almost three acres near the school. A long journey requires a first step.
What can you do to help? Please volunteer to help remove buckthorn during 6 scheduled buckthorn removal events. (aka “Buckthorn Bust”) Check out removebadplants.com for more information about how easy it is to remove buckthorn.
Please join us at any of these events planned for the woods north of the Oakwood playfields.
Saturday, October 4, 8:30 a.m. to noon
Saturday, October 11, 8:30 a.m. to noon
Saturday, October 25, 8:30 a.m. to noon
Saturday, November 1, 8:30 a.m. to noon
Saturday, November 8, 8:30 a.m. to noon
Leader: Dave Turbenson, awarded the 2012 Environmental Champion Award by the city of Plymouth
Meeting place: The woods north of the play fields where the asphalt trail go through the woods.
All removal events will start at 8 am and finish at noon.
We don’t expect volunteers to work for all 3.5 hours. Please consider coming for 1 to 2 hours. You will be amazed how many buckthorn plants can be removed in a 1-2 hour period. Kids as young as 8 are welcome to help out.
Cut-stump removal method
Working as a team, volunteers will use the cut-stump removal method to remove and kill buckthorn. One person will cut the buckthorn down and one will drag it to a staging area where it will be fed into a wood chipper by the city of Plymouth. The last step is to apply an herbicide to the stump. No herbicide comes in contact with your skin. It is a very clean process that kills the plant. Please consider bringing the following items to help this volunteer effort.
All items you bring will only be used by you and your group.
The coordinating group of these events has dozens of these items on hand for you to use.
Your efforts will give you great satisfaction.

IT IS NOT TOO LATE DO START ELIMINATING BUCKTHORN IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD THIS YEAR.
Focus on the female plants with the berries/seeds. Cutting down just a few female plants around your home will prevent 1000’s of seeds from being spread by birds around your neighborhood.
